Northern Lights by Philip Pullman is the first book in the series, His Dark Materials and may also be known in its film form as the Golden Compass. It is set in another universe that is similar to our own. The story starts in Oxford at a college named Jordan were the star of our story, Lyra Belacqua, is met. She and her Deamon Pantalaimon hide under the table and see the master of the college put poison in one of her soon to be arriving relatives drink's. Lyra's father, who she believes is her uncle, Lord Asriel arrives at the college to show the scholars of the college what he has found while on his trip to the north (in our world the north pole).
Lyra, who is hiding in a cupboard in the room Lord Asriel is doing his presentation in, saw the master of the college put poison in her "uncle's" drink and just before the scholars arrive, she warns Lord Asriel of what had been done. Lord Asriel blames a servant for knocking over the drink when he did it himself. After the presentation had finished Lyra spoke to her father and he said he had been given money to go back to the north for more exploration. The next day Mrs.Coulter, Lyra's mother although she doesn't know, arrives and Lyra goes from mystery to mystery as she tries to uncover the truth about her mother and father.
This is an excellent book and I would not only buy this book but the whole series too.
